Hikma Health COVID-19 Response

Hikma Health is committed to preventing the spread of COVID-19 in the under-resourced and vulnerable populations which we serve, particularly the crowded refugee camps where our patients live. With our clinical partners, we have designed and built a screening module in our mobile application with which providers can assess in real-time a patient’s current symptoms, risk for developing COVID-19, and recommend them for isolation and testing once it becomes available. We released our new mobile application software on March 30, 2020, including this screening module for COVID-19. The software is available to the global public, free and open source. We will continue to rapidly iterate over the coming weeks to respond to the evolving global need.

The Hikma Health app’s offline-first capability empowers frontline healthcare workers to screen their patients for COVID-19 at the point of care, and securely share the data with organizers of the local response. The screening module assesses symptoms of and risk factors for COVID-19, as well as temporally tracks travel to endemic areas. The software offers secure online-offline sync for health data so that physicians in under-resourced settings with variable network connectivity can rapidly screen patients and record data at the point of care. For example, a mobile health clinic with a single provider serving a population of refugee patients in the mountainous Bekaa Valley region of Lebanon will be able to screen hundreds of patients for COVID-19 within a day, and identify those in need of isolation, testing, and symptomatic relief.

Hikma Health is also working continuously to spread disease awareness and scientific communication about prevention against infection in multiple languages, facilitating efforts for translation and dissemination to our partner organizations delivering care on the ground. It is imperative that accurate and easily digestible information be circulated to patients. We are collating and regularly updating a library of Arabic and Spanish resources for COVID-19.

Finally, as the crisis unfolds in our own communities here in the United States, we are deploying our engineering and data science teams to support larger efforts in the domestic COVID-19 response. Our team is building a COVID-19 policy map at county-level resolution to inform policy makers, data scientists, and the public about regional differences in policies and enable study of those policies’ effects on COVID-19 outcomes. We are also exploring partnerships to provide custom health data software to domestic mobile van clinics serving vulnerable populations including undocumented immigrants, undomiciled persons, and patients with opioid use disorder.

The unfolding of the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of accurate and sustained health data collection for months to come, particularly in underserved populations. We will work tirelessly until COVID-19 is no longer a threat to the lives of our patients around the world. If you would like to be a part of our lifesaving fight against COVID-19, we invite you to donate or join us.
